Is It Possible To End Hunger?
Malawians typically grow food during the “rainy season,” which takes place between November and February. Using the rain for irrigation, they grow maize, tomatoes, beans, onions, and greens. The food they are able to harvest during these four months is stored, and has to last them throughout the rest of the year.
When the “dry season” arrives, it is difficult to grow food. If they do manage to grow any crops during this time, they must use buckets to carry water to and from the crops, often for 5+ hours per day. Even if there had been no draught or erratic rainfall during the rainy season, it is during this time that families in the villages begin running short on food. This is called the “hunger season.” It is the reason why food insecurity is rampant across the developing world.
YOUR partnership ends the hunger season by equipping farmers with the tools and training they need to grow food all year. The result? Food security, and the end of the hunger season.
